Welcome to our website!
In 2001 we decided to buy a small estate in Methoni, Messinia on the Peloponnesus in Greece. We bought this property in the first place because we fell in love with the breathtaking panorama of the Mediterranean Sea and the 14th century fortress that was built in this water as well as the beautiful olive trees. Quickly we thoroughly enjoyed our orchard and making our olive oil proved to be a fascinating experience. This experience and the taste of our ‘fluid gold’ inspired us to share this joy with others.
Each year around November/ December we travel to Methoni and Longa, a village close to Koroni in Messinia where Sakis Michalarakos, an Athenian banker, has his orchard. His orchard is, like ours, close to the sea and the salty breeze that blows through our trees is partly responsible for the exceptional taste of the olives.
We decided to name our olive oil “Odysseia” after the Greek hero Odysseus, who roamed the Mediterranean for years before he could return to his kingdom, Ithaca. The by now well-known Mediterranean diet was already an established way of life in Odysseus’ time and an important part of this diet has always been olive oil. The olive tree and its products were used for many aspects of daily life. The story goes that one of the legs of the bed Odysseus shared with his wife Penelope was build from the wood of an olive tree...
Elsewhere on this website (Pictures Odysseia Olive Oil) we will elaborate on the way our olive oil makes its way from the tree to you. We will also inform you on how you can obtain Odysseia Olive Oil with a personalized label.
